Bengal Pride

 “Bengal Pride” is a finely crafted sculpture of a Bengal tiger poised mid-stride and elevated by three tall basalt columns. Commissioned by the Lewiston Independent School District No. 1,this large-scale mascot sculpture was funded by Dwayne Clark, the Class of 1977, and many more generous donors. At 11 ft. long and 9 ft. tall, the 1.5-life-size monument was dedicated at the main entrance to the Lewiston High School on October 19, 2023.

Artist Shayne Watkins superbly expresses anatomy and movement in the sculpture, which conveys both power and elegance, making the tiger an imposing yet captivating subject.  The tiger's body is elongated and muscular, with one paw extended forward in a confident, deliberate step, which evokes a dynamic sense of motion and agility. The subtle textures for the hair and stripes bring the figure to life, while the realistic patination further emphasizes the tiger’s natural grace and power. The choice of varying pedestal heights cleverly introduces elements of suspense, tension and drama.

“Bengal Pride” creates an engaging visual narrative of balance and strength with bold interpretation that is both inspiring and evocative. Our paths are not always smooth and well-defined; they can be steep, rocky and obscure. Just as the tiger relies upon natural instinct and keen senses to maneuver through a precarious environment, so, too, must students engage their foundational knowledge, practical skills and principles for social harmony as they successfully navigate their journey through life. Lewiston Bengals advance
